The Living Umbrella Provides both Shade and Color

 The Kloeckner Metals York branch has partnered with Living Canopies to produce the world’s first shade umbrella to utilize plant life instead of a fabric canopy. The Living Umbrella is a patio sized umbrella with a steel frame that can host a variety of different plants. It is portable, durable, and contains its own irrigation system.

“It keeps nice, beautiful living flowers so that people can enjoy nature in a little different way,” says Dave Tilley, CEO of Living Canopies and Associate professor at the University of Maryland. “In our research lab at the University of Maryland, we are always trying to figure out ways that we can couple natural systems to solve human problems.”

Sante Fe Springs Partners with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation & Pipeline to a Cure

Stan Bryson, a Processing Manager at Kloeckner’s Santa Fe Springs (SFS) branch, began his involvement with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) when a close friend of his, Emily Haager, shared her experiences of living with the genetically-inherited disease - and her love of surfing. It turns out CF and surfing have something in common. Studies have shown that inhaling concentrated salt water helps CF sufferers and young surfers with CF have significantly healthier lungs.

The award goes to the top salesperson, but the competition isn’t as simple as who sells the most.Named for the Kloeckner Metals logo, theTop Dog of the Month competition utilizes a points system so that all the salespeople are on an even playing field. Various things have point values, such as sales, profit, processing orders, and outbound calls.

The event happened in early August at Little Lake Middle School where 400 families were invited to come and receive information on education and health. This event also centered on donating school supplies such as back packs, clothes and shoes.
