The Kloeckner Metals Los Angeles branch recently recognized driver Guillermo Gonzalez for his impressive driving record. Guillermo achieved 2.1 million miles of accident-free driving, and for this, he was given the Career Achievement Safety Award.
“I feel appreciated and recognized, that I have been transporting the material out to the customers safely on a daily basis,” Guillermo says.
Guillermo follows his own basic rules of the road. He drives with the flow of traffic, and he always keeps his distance. Pre and post check are extremely important. He suggests double checking in order to make sure everything is secure and in place. He also avoids hard breaking to protect his load.
“I figure that every time you touch the brakes that something has the opportunity to come loose,” Guillermo says. “I try to avoid using the braking system and use the motor and the J-brake whenever I can.”
Guillermo emphasizes that it is important to stay aware of your surroundings. Motorcycles usually don’t pose too much of a problem, but people running late for work driving small “race cars” can drive erratically. He also notices that people are always looking at their phones and not paying attention to the road. Rubbernecking is also a common problem.
“If you see an accident, don’t look just keep going, that’s the best help you could do,” Guillermo says.
Guillermo thinks about his years at Kloeckner. He recalls once, and only once, where a customer actually called in to let the company know he was driving safely. Usually, people only call in when they have a complaint. Guillermo enjoys working for Kloeckner and the tight-knit atmosphere of the workplace.
“It really has become more about friendships, and family now with myself and my co-workers here at Kloeckner,” Guillermo says. “Time is sure going by faster than it used to, and regulations are increasingly stricter.”
